After our introduction to the 2015 racing season with the Fast one in JHB, it was a last minute dash to the metaphoric “line” to get an entry in for the South African road championships in Nelspruit.

Having beat the deadline by an hour, we were entered.

So bags were packed once again and we made the trip up to Mbombela stadium..

44 degree heat with 95% humidity awaited us on race day, at 2pm!!

Juanita rode “flatbox” on her individual time trial that same morning and only had 4 hours to recover before dishing out more  pain on the back of a tandem!

Although the entered field was small, there were some formidable names to contend with and we knew it was going to be a tough day in the office..

The plan was to ride conservatively for the first 4 or 5 laps(of 8) and then see how the legs were feeling..

On the first lap the peloton was already split and we were 5 bikes left, all watching each other as intently as a hawk hovering above a field mouse..

By lap 4 we were 4 left..Juanita had obviously recovered considerably after her TT effort as she suggested a little “dig” on lap 5.. This split it up again to 3 bikes.

Laps 6, 7 and 8 we attacked on the climb, but still, we remained 3. So it was either going to end in a sprint with 10km to go or we were going to have to throw down the gauntlet again, but before the climb…this turned out to be the best decision as we pried open a gap 200 metres before the crest.. Then it was shifting gear and opening all cylinders, which Juanita does superbly well, and time trialed the last 1.5km.

It was a sweet I have been dreaming of since I started tandem racing…

What I’m now really looking forward to, is sporting the “stripes” at our next event, the Ride for Sight…fitting that an Ophthalmologist will ride that one..
